In Fassbinder’s early films as well, the theater of everyday social communication is the subject of the acting. In Fassbinder’s case we can also say that the actor produces gestures that are already contained in their own everyday existence.23 But this everyday theater in Fassbinder’s work does not at all mean some kind of role-playing of social behavior, but the acting out of empathetic individuals, the private theater of hysteria, the passion of sexual cravings, the pathos-laden expressive forms of the suffering ego. Granted, this pathos is stripped of any illusion of vitality. As if the everyday gestures and ways of speaking, the contemporary hairstyles, the miniskirts, and bell-bottoms were artifacts that had simply been found, the film’s staging conducts a kind of autopsy on the ensemble of actors; it draws a relation between the actors in their acting to the dissector’s scientific gaze. The gestural play of expression falls apart under the camera’s lens into the artifacts from an acting of empathy from which all life has vanished.
